Boss Cross #3

Got a slow start, was in the back and that's where I stayed. Very hilly course with grass that literally sucks the energy out of you.

I told Shad S. that he was the man to beat today, he proved me right! He won and ended up lapping 3rd place!

Tomorrow doing a road ride at 1:00, leaving from Volker bicycles. No Lawrence for me!

Jane got 2nd!

Steve and Joe road great in the 4 race while leading for part of it, not sure where they ended up but I believe top 10 with Nathan and Adam Keck.

Smithville CX

Rain stayed away long enough to get through the open race. Felt like my chest was going to explode after 1 lap and took it easy for the remainder of the race. Had the occasional dig where I pedaled hard but couldn't get competitive. The course was a lot like last years with the addition of the beach which meant lots of sand.

Benon's first race.

Cup Weekend

Didn't make it to Topeka on Saturday. I was up with the little dude until 5am, then my alarm didn't go off at 7 so I didn't have time to catch my ride-probably a good thing. My brother was in town so I was able to entertain and get some hours in at the store.

Sunday was the blvd. cup. Awesome weather, 3 years in a row there has been picturesque fall weather. Little windy today though. I watched the 4 race, Eric got 3rd after winning the race yesterday.

I warmed up a little and tried to focus. My stomach and back hurt, but not as much as my legs were going to.

Starting the race I felt pretty good. I ended up towards the back and started moving up little by little. Finally a big gap opened up ahead of the rider right in front of me and it was hard to keep up a fast pace. I felt like throwing up but kept on. Finished the race, didn't get last place.

Afterwords we were treated to free food (pasta and cajun food as well as pale ale) it was very good. The Blvd. folks put on a great event.

Back is now in some serious pain!

Chris Cross

Very cool course. Lots of climbing, bricks, off-camber stuff, and grass. Got a good start but by the end of the first lap the cookies I had eaten prior wanted to come back up. I felt sick throughout the 2nd lap but then felt better and started riding hard. I got 17th place out of 25. Pretty much what I deserve. Hopefully lil dude comes soon and I can start eating good and training better.

Upgrading

Throughout this summer there has been lots of talk of upgrades for cross. I was approached by a few people and asked what to do about "sandbaggers" and all I could think of was to add more payout/places in the open class and less in the 3/4 class.

I am hoping more people have ideas.

Last year was my first full season of cross. The year before I raced two days, partly because I was working 90 hour weeks and didn't have a car.

The fall of 2008 was a memorable one. I lined up to race my first 3/4 race and was smoked. I felt like crap and did the 4 race in topeka the next race and won it, then doubled up and took 6th in the 3/4. I felt really good and about the same thing happened at blvd. cup.

From then on I only raced 3/4 races, I was at my limit every race, eyes popping out of my head, blood in my mouth and hoping for top 10 results. My best was a 2nd place at Boss Cross #1.
See Here.

It felt really good getting a little cash to pay for gas/entry fees and it also kept me coming back for more.

Thanks to my good friend Marcus, I was able to race 13 times last season, without his transportation I probably only would have gotten to less than a handful.

Now it is 2009 and our CX community seems to be stuck as it was last year.

Thanks to Tilford and co. showing up to the open races, they are more of a spectacle with 20+ racers instead of 10 or so that we saw last year. It truly shows that the scene here in KC is progressing.

But I still here the words tossed around like "Sandbagger" in the 3 field. My good friend and Teammate Dan has already been given crap for racing 3's. Look at his results!

He hasn't raced barely a handful of times and he is already asked to upgrade to a 2! Wow!

I know, I know, must of us can probably name at least 10 dudes who have been getting podium finished in 3 races for a few years, they are comfortable there and not ready to commit to the big leagues. But after 5 or 6 races? There is still so much to learn and experience!

I wish we were big like portland. 100 beginner women toeing the line!

We have 3 categories. 4, 3, and open. The differences between 4 and 3 is not much, but 3 to open is a ton, please believe me.

I'm not saying I'm comfortable or confident, but sooner or later I will want to be there, so why not now, why not try and get faster now. Yes, I have to pay someone to be at the store, pay for gas, pay entry fees and leave empty handed with a smile on my face each weekend, but it is worth it! For me it is.

Just showing up, paying my entry fee, supporting local race organizers, being a part of the culture, that is good!

Please leave any thoughts you have after reading this.

Grass Track

Indy Fab came out with a grass track bike. Apparently they saw mine I made in June and decided to duplicate it.

I'll let you decide who's is better. It should be obvious.

Boss Cross

Awesome race, Great payouts, good weather, and great competition. It really couldn't have been better!

I had a tough time getting used to the pace on saturday, finished ok, ahead of a few, but behind a lot of riders.

Upon reading the results of the Gloucestor race today I see

31. Mathew Ankney Kccx/verge in 1:06:10

A very fast racer who could place podium here finishing a great race, but still 7 minutes off from the winner, who would probably finish 8 minutes behind Neils Albert.

Then there is me, who finished 5 minutes behind the winner. Looks like I have a lot of work to do!

Actually felt ok through parts of the race, got to dig pretty deep, got that cool metal/blood taiste in my mouth!

All night on saturday I had bad stomach cramps and got no sleep. My legs felt fine, but everything else seemed broke. I struggled with the though of stepping back and doing the 3/4 race, at least then I wouldn't be leaving empty handed but instead, decided to do the SS race. It was earlier, shorter, and would allow more time to recover for the open race.

I raced it harder than I planned and got 2nd. It was a lot of fun racing with just 1 gear, though I'd like to get a faster cog in the back next time.

My legs felt pretty heavy after the ss race and I didn't have much left for the open race. There were a ton of racers for the open race, a ton of fast racers. After 1 lap I threw in the towel and prayed I'd be lapped, I was.

It is really good to see such a strong open field for these events, it is great for the cx community in the midwest, specifically KC.

Its going to be a while, but eventually the fast races will make me faster.
