There are probably 100 tires out there you can buy and race for cx. What works for people in Portland doesn't work for people in Kentucky and vise versa....here in KC, its a bit harder, since weather isn't exactly forecastable here. Last year we had a super dry season. You could race the hutchinson Piranha all year and never be at a disadvantage. That tire is simply super fast, and since its tubeless ready, it can also be a lightweight setup. There is tons of reading for going tubeless, but if you don't have a tubeless ready tire, like stan's or hutchinson, your eventually going to get beat from a mechanical.
Kenda, they have a bunch of tubeless ready cx tires, 700x32, coming out, they don't look bad, or that heavy either.
If I were riding clinchers this season, I would have two tires, Maxxis Mudwrestlers and Hutchinson Piranhas. The mudwrestlers...you'd have to run tubed. If you have to run tubeless, hutchinson does make the bulldog, its a huge tire, if you are racing cx for the first time, and want the most advantage in handling and confidence in turning, ride these...but they are slow on dry surfaces.
The last clincher tire, the panaracer crossblaster, its the best tire if you can only have 1 tire. Its fast all around, and really light.
I am racing tubulars this year. My favorites are FMB and Tufo. FMB is crazy good, all handmade in france, probably the most beautiful bike pieces you can hold in your hand. There super mud tire is coming in soon, and the gripoxl, ssc, and ssc sprint.
Tufo, they make tires in Europe as well, tubeless tubulars and super fast too. I'll probably be racing the PRIMUS. Its so fast....all the time. The cubus is a cool tire too, but probably wouldn't run it unless it was super muddy.
On my scale the flexus primus or cubus weigh 300 grams. The fmbs weigh 400, just like the challenge or vittoria.
Tufo flexus tires cost $80, the non flexus tires or $45, the fmb are $90.
Haven't decided on a bike yet. There are too many options, we even just started selling Stevens. They are super light, 1200 gram frames with light 400 gram forks. English threaded bb so you can run the chris king bottom brackets.
If no one buys this in august, I'll build it up to 16lbs with 1x10 and tubulars. Like I keep saying, I might save money and buy a stevens, get the weight down below 15...
The nova race is an awesome bike, the same fork as the supernova, light 7005 aluminum frame...should be fast.
