People keep screwing up their tires trying to go tubeless. Here's the steps I take, usually it works.
1. Put Stan's tape covering all the spoke holes of the rim, use 2 layers, be sure its very tight.
2. Mount Tubeless Bulldog or Piranha tire with tube. Do not use a tire lever, if you can't mount it, take it to a bike store. Using a tire lever messes up the beed.
3. Air the tire up to 50psi with tube. The tape will get pressed down firmly and the tire will "learn" its shape. Let sit for 24 hours.
4. Remove tube.
5. Install stan's valve core for tubeless, remove valve core.
6. Get soap, I like to put dish soap in water in a water bottle, shake it real good and it gets soapy. Use a brush to get the entire bead on both sides of the tire real soapy. Be sure to get the opposite side of the valve really soapy since this is the area it is hard to seat.
7. With the valve core removed, use air compressor to air up. Since the core is removed, air will get into the tire way faster.
8. DO NOT air tire above 50psi. If you get to 50 psi and the tire isn't seated all the way, then take out all the air, add more soap, try again. Just cuz the tire says 80 psi, doesn't mean the rim tape or the rim can take that much air with big cx tires.
9. Once the tire is seated(pop, pop), remove the compressor pump and the air will come out of the tire quickly.
10. While the bead is still fit into the rim, use a syringe to install the sealant.
11. Install the valve core.
12. Air up the tire with a floor pump to 35 psi, shake around and ride it.

Racing
Found out my rear wheel went flat because of the stan's drying out, I had just put stan's in 3 weeks ago, makes me look around for another option...maybe ec90 sl's to tufo flexus tires...that save 2 lbs and only cost another $1200.
ultegra wheelset 1650grams
2 tubeless tires 820 grams
sealant 40 grams
total 2510
ec90 sl 38mm tubular 1230
2 tufo flexus tires 602
glue 20
total 1852
Maybe you should buy them so I'm not tempted to...I'll sell ec90 sl tubular wheels w/o tires for $800, they retail for $2k people! Then a smokin deal on whatever tires, grifo, fango, flexus, xg, xs, ssc.
Gotta get ready for this! Click

Manion's CX
Started the race and was 3rd into the first turn behind Tilford and S. Smith, then passed them through the barriers and by the time I was at the bottom of the hill I had at least 5 seconds. Coming up the hill I was passed by Tilford, Smith, Jensen, and J Johnson. I think I would have been able to stay close but my rear tire began loosing air quickly. By the 2nd lap, or maybe 3rd, (don't remember) it was all the way flat at the bottom of the hill. I felt it rolling going down and coming back up sucked. I got passed by many.
At the top I went through the barn and aired up my rear tire and was able to finish the race. I got to within 5 seconds of 7th, 8th, and 9th, but couldn't close it, they were all together working well and I couldn't get going good.
I had a helmet cam on my head, I forgot to turn it on which sucked.
I heard we did 9 laps for that race...it didn't seem like we did that many but we did. Melissa(my wife) who was some kind of chief referee said the leaders were throwing down consistent 5 1/2 minute laps, the course can't be that hard right? Many people thought it was one of the hardest courses they have done, what I said to them was that they will never get faster unless they race harder courses against faster riders. Come on KC, if you want to put KC cyclocross on the map, you wanna race worlds in 2 years, you gotta race hard courses against fast people. Mix it up.

Me 1 minute into the race.

InterBike
No MUd for Manion's CX this Sunday, click here.
Jamis 2011 bikes click HERE.
First time in Vegas, First time for Interbike. It kind of sucked. Flight left from KC at 7:00, woke up at 5:00am, flight delayed 1 hour, arrived in vegas at 10, walked to interbike from airport, walked all day, saw a few cool things but most of it sucked. Then I had 2 choices. Go to the XTR shimano party where there were some "good looking hired servers," or go to cx vegas. Obviously, I chose the latter. Didn't have a way to get but Yakima saved the day. Free bus ride to the race(stocked with tecate/modolo, then had vip pass to the yakima zone, free qdoba, free sierra nevada, free mantes ride. Sweet.
Focus Mares Team now has force with fsa crank. New color, still $4300, CLICK HERE FOR MORE.
Pinarello Paris in Sky.
Fizik Shoes, not a working mans shoe at all, not a "pros" shoe at all, guess there made for romantic getaways in wine country.
Focus Mares Pro, $2700, all ultegra. The finish is awesome. In fact, on most of the focus bikes, they did this crazy two tone deal where 1 tube is matte finish, the other gloss, looks real solid, I want one.
Dropouts on the new basanova. It is a $1000 fast steal commuter bike. Disc brakes, cx/road geometry, very cool.Click here for more.
Beatniks from Jamis, $370, very nice.
D29 Team, x0 10 speed, amclassic wheels, $4600.
D29 Pro, $3k
Paris Complete with red/fulcrum 1, $6k, not bad at all.
Met the nice people from Swrve, this is a new windproof winter cap, it is nice, I will be stocking these for sure.
I can't talk about this one, just can't.
Favorite color of the Paris, BoB, with campy.
The race was probably the most exciting I've seen, even more than nationals. It was almost like a crit. Driscoll got off the front early and maintained a 20-25 second gap the whole race. With half a lap to go, the field started to get going good and Johnson/Powers couldn't slow them down. Eventually this guy from france won, I think they said he was a 4 time national champ, right at the line, kind of exciting, but also sad.
Trebon Leading up the hill, looks strung out.
OK, really strung out.
At the start.
????
Yakima Mantes, I heard about this all day, it breathes fire, goes up and down, and you can dance on it.
Final Lap, trebon trying to bring back Driscoll(he's in the background), Click Here for more.
After cxvegas the bus took us back to the expo center where I began walking, walked for about 15 miles all around, then stopped at mcdonalds, wrote up 2 preseason orderds(mcdonalds at 2am is a trip in vegas), then walked 20 more miles until 5 where I walked to the airport. Definitely wore the wrong shoes for this trip, will know for next time.
I figure I walked about 60 miles between the airport, the tradeshow, lv, and back to the airport. Hip is sore but feels fine when I road my bike this morning. Just hurts to walk.
=
Ghetto Tubeless.
See the cut up inner tube? Dude used This. Just add water to it and it will seal up the holes. I could not get the tire to burp with 25psi in it and everyone knows raze tires are not good tubeless.

New Bike.
Last year I raced the pake as a ss bike and as a pit bike, being a pit bike, I had it geared a little lower(since if You have to go to the pit, you are probably tired of running and it is so late in the race you are cross eyed. The gearing I had on it was 39/19, now its 42/19 which feels great.
Anyways, here is the new "baby" bike for the cx season until I retire my pake from racing again.
Also, I bought one of THESE(click here) We'll see how it works on the bike baby carrier seat, it was $5 at a yard sale place so no big deal if it doesn't work.

Here's the existing hole in my front tire from my ss. It didn't seem that bad, I patched it with an inner tube patch and put a bunch of glue on the outside. When I landed after jumping that log it busted immediately. I told my self 1000 times before the race to just use the bulldog from my focus on the ss for the ss race, then trade back, but nope, had to risk it.
I've got a panaracer tubeless patch kit I'll try out, I'll make sure to put it through some heavy riding/testing to be sure it works, these tires are way to expensive to throw out after 1 cut.
Weird Article, click here. Why do local bike shops still charge so much?

KC CUP
Got 5th in the open race. Had to dnf the single speed race. Had it won after 2 laps and I jumped a log and my patch in my tubeless tire failed, cauased an immediate crash but still felt fine to race open.
I sucked at the start. Had a good gear but couldn't get clipped in(1st time racing eggbeaters) when I did clip in I passed a ton of riders and got in a good place, 3rd. Eventually it got too hard and I lost 2 more positions. Finished the race in 5th place, a free 6 pack of michelob ultra was waiting for me as well as a free beer from blvd.
The focus bike was awesome, I think I'll keep it. The ultegra 10 speed was nice, it took a while to get used to but I'm starting to dig it.
I ran the bulldog/front, piranha/rear combo at 35, way to much pressure for such a bumpy course, my back hurts.
I was able to use a helmet cam through the whole thing, hopefully it will be edited and posted soon.

Post Swope.
Went out to swope last night to pre ride the course. Its a lot like last year but a little backwards. With the fresh rain from yesterday it was a bit slick. Bulldogs were at 28 and felt great, still a little slippery in the single track. If no rain shows between now and the race I'll probably put a piranha on the back.

The focus mares cx frame was awesome, first time really riding a fc cx bike. Super stiff through corners which is nice when pedaling hard. One thing I forgot was how much cantis suck, even the $320 kind.
I was in the 39 most of the time, definitely wasn't riding race pace. This is my first cx bike going 2x10, the last 2 years I road 42t front, now its 39/46, we'll see how long it lasts.

Swope CX
Swope CX is this saturday with the elite race at 2. Click Here.
I hear the course is super bumpy with some very technical sections, also heard there's not much climbing. Will find out thursday when we go preride.

Tubeless
Just got the bulldog to the a23 wheelset, very easy with air pump, no soap needed. Tires are killing me, I really want to race the cx pro from schwalbe or the panaracer crossblaster tubeless, both are 200grams lighter than the bulldog for the pair, but they aren't going tubeless on any rim other than the ztr 355. Last year I raced the bulldog all season, it is a huge tire, 37mm(measured), it weighs 400 grams. It is absolutely bombproof(i ride it at swope mtn. trails occasionally) and would definitely recommend them to anyone who is racing cx for the first time and are unsure of their handling technique. Hopefully I'll get some tires going on a bike soon before swope cx. Maybe just glue the tufo flexus to the vista cruiser rim, or maybe fmb ssc...

46 grams
How to save 46 grams in the pedals...
Chromoly spindle weighs 54 grams...there are 2 per bicycle.
Ti Spindle is 31 grams...there are also 2 needed per bike.
SL Pedals with ti spindles are lighter!
Also, I registered for all 3 days of jingle cx this year, already...this means I will not be at the back of 97 rider field at the start.
Also, bought my ticket to interbike, leave kc 7:05, arrive las vegas 8:15...business all day, then cxvegas, then Andrew will win $10k atGOLDSPRINTS. Then explore las vegas till 6:05am where my plane will fly me back to kc the following morning.
