Saturday and Sunday

Saturdays race I have a hard time remembering what happened. There were a bunch of moves, nothing stuck, there were never a good mix of riders, finally a group of 9 were off, every team was represented, but none of them wanted to drive it.
Eventually Stolte and Mills got a way, team from tulsa had 3 really strong riders but they couldn't get away comfortably. Kent, was riding really good, in almost every move but this one. He ended up riding the front, for 3-4 laps, super hard, we were strung out single file. After he was done the break had gone from 40 seconds to 10 seconds, they were within reach, but no one was ready to finish the work, guess they were tired.
A fast man from Snapple jumped, made it to the 2 man move and left Stolte with Mills on his wheel. Mills won, snapple guy 2nd, and Shadd Smith won the field sprint for 3rd.
I was going ok, I was in 10th position or so coming out of the circle drive, with 100 meters to go I stopped sprinting because I new I wouldn't have been able to get by the guy in front of me, bad choice, 3-4 guys passed me at the line and I got 16th.
Sunday went better, Kent drove a break with tilford/Vinton for a lap. Then they started working together and built a huge gap. The course was backwards with 2 90d corners before the hill. So it was harder to get up the hill. With a headwind coming down the hill it was pointless to attack up it. Position was crucial going into the final 2 corners, I was about 10th going into them and only got by 1 guy by the finish line, it was a really fast finish with the line at the bottom of the hill. The promoters could have moved it 200 meters further down at least, that would have made things a little more interesting, maybe next year.
I ended up 12th with Kent getting 2nd. Good job Kent.
Gonna be a tough weekend coming up.

tokc
Too much caffeine. I attacked after a lap, too hard for too long. My face turns red and heart goes up. Breathing was still good and legs didn't hurt but heart hurt. Went to the back and a few guys fall off, I tried to get around but couldn't make it back.

electric
I'm an environmentalist sort of, I don't like using electricity at all. I'm the one turning off peoples lights in there houses when the room isn't being used. Its basically the whole reason I ride bikes in the first place.
But this whole electric shifting thing is gaining some momentum. For the past few weeks I've been dreaming up my cx bike. A 1x10 drivetrain with diy shifting/batteries with just a di2 derailleur. Go ahead, google diy di2 and see what you find.

Now that ultegra will be available, I'm thinking I can get a derailleur for about $300, and make shifter/battery system for $200. Then I'd just need normal brake levers.
People ask why you would want electric, doesn't mechanical work just as good? Thing about electric is it shifts when you hit the button, not after you hit the button, its instant, plus it makes perfect sense for cx, since you don't have to worry about cables getting gunked up.
I'm sure I'll be just as fast with sram red 1x10, it probably is lighter too, just not as cool.

Video.
Helmet cam footage here. Its just the first few laps, and a crash, more to come on it.
Too busy to write about the racing, but when someone asks how Tulsa was, I say, "hard." Its too easy to say tough.
Tour of KC and Tour of Lawrence coming up. Not super motivated for these races but am for this. I'm not really into gravel, or spending more than 3 hours on a bike at 1 setting, but the challenge allures me. Plus it is an excuse to not be sitting in front of the tv watching the tdf.

Video
I should have helmet cam footage in the next week or so up from the Sunday race. Here's a video midway through the race. At this point, I think 50 riders had already called quits. This is Jensens first attack, then he goes later solo.

Wichita RiverFest Race
$400 to first place here, a lot of people made the trip. Had a 36 rider field on the flattest course I have ever seen. If it wasn't for the wind on the last stretch before the final turn into the finish line I doubt there would have been as many people getting away. I planned on being very active in the first 20 minutes, turned out, Tradewind was planning on taking it easy the first 20, after all, it was 100 degrees out and it was going to be an 80 minute crit. So I got in all these moves, but tradewind wasn't doing anything, it was very unlike them. I made a great move, had 2 guys up the road maybe 15 seconds, and this guy in a u.s. kit on my wheel, I pull him around the whole course, then move over to let him pull through, and the dude attacks me. Swings right 30 feet and destroys himself. Couldn't believe it. Just left me there. I sat up, waited for the field, and about 1 minute later the field catches him with the 2 still away. After being in so many failed moves I sit in, towards the back, by now I am hot and tired and see 34 laps to go, great. Next few laps aren't bad, Jensen attacks and 2 go with him. The guy Jensen is pretty strong now, he can sit on his seat with his hands on the hoods and lay down 900 watts for 3 minutes. I'd like to put a power meter on his bike to see. Dudes out of the saddle heads down barely hanging on to his wheel as he's just riding away.
So Jensen and 2 others are off the front aways, and eventually Tilford goes and a bunch go with him. This is where it kind of sucks to be in a 1/2/3 race. There were a bunch of dudes towards the front of the race who couldn't go, and it was way to hard to jump around all of them to get up to the lead group with all the gaps forming. Guess I know next time to stay at the front.
So the next 10 laps are pretty uneventful. There are 12 guys up the road and no one motivated to make a move. A few guys try but nothing real goes. Then Jensen and the other 2 lap us, a few laps later Tilfords group of 10 catches and we all stay together for the final 8 laps or so.
I end up beating everyone that was in my group I believe, I laid down a good sprint and had good speed through the last corner.
Lining up to the race I don't believe everyone was thinking, we have to beat Tradewind. Yes, of the top 5 racers there, 3 of them were tradewind, but I'm pretty sure everyone there were ready to work with them. No one was "against" them. Tilford complains of racing 3 vs. 40 or so. It wasn't like that at all. Pretty much every move that went away had a tradewind guy in it, because the all the racers knew that if it didn't, then tradewind would bring it back. Which is what happened. Then you see things like Tilford clipping his pedal and jumps a bit, on the widest turn of the race, and everyone slows down and asks if he's ok. Everyone in the field knew that if they wanted a good result they had to race with them, not against.

Hydration and events
Got some hot weather ahead of us. I always try and drink lots of water a few days prior. Steve, who ran track for d1 school KU for 4 years told me you gotta start drinking lots of water a few days before the event and every day after that in order to get fully hydrated. You can't just drink a liter of water 1 hour before the race and call it hydration. It makes sense. Probably too late for you DK200 Riders. Sure am glad I'm racing 75min+3 races instead of 18hours of gravel in 98d.

POTPIE
I own a small business. I like to support other people who own there own businesses, who work hard and are always protecting what they have worked so hard to create. Things that are unique, especially to Kansas City. My first installation is Potpie. I'll probably do random places whenever I feel inspired. This place inspired me last week.
Its a small place, so get a reservation if you are there during busy hours. They've been around for 8 years. They have amazing food for not a lot of money. A perfect place for intimate special occasion dinners.

Notice "THE" Pan Roasted Chicken. It is good. Potpies are good too.
CLICK!
John and Sarah own the place. They helped us with food at Manions 2, plus John races cx/road and does "rides" like trans iowa and dirty kanzaa.

Resting.
YOGA Tonight!
Trying to rest a little more, spent sat/sun/mon getting up early and 3 hours in on the bike. Legs are way more tired than they were after the St. Louis races. Definitely not used to riding that much. I'm trying not to make the mistake of overtraining before big races like Tulsa Tough and Tour of Lawrence.
3 articles on peaking thanks to JOE.

After riding monday morning I had nothing left for the 6pm monday ride. Here I am getting wopped on by a bunch of cat4s.
