Austin and NAHBS.

Coolest bike.....Naked. I walked around the show twice, but didn't even bother to check out the booth, until Joe forced me, I'm glad he did.

Look closely. No bolts, no skewers, nothing, its from the future.

Most under rated...Cielo.

Click. All the bikes are made by Chris King, or this cool guy Buck. The green bike is sweet, I hate the color, but Chris made it and it is so good. Took 76 hours to build, mostly due to the work on the ht lugs to integrate the bearing cups, so you can you use a ht normally used for a 1" fork and use an 1 1/8" fork instead, pretty incredible! They also do a Stainless bike, frameset goes for $2400, the main thing I liked about it is how they painted it, then media blasted the paint for the decal. Check it. They are also doing a new race/sport geometry, which I want. 68.5mm drop with 415mm stays.

What's in? PF30, everyones doing it, its much better. bb30 is out.

Last thing...Fizik was there! We got to try on the shoes, the shoes fit the best. They will be shipping to me in May. 40 pairs. Come get some.

If you have one of these, give it to me.

More thoughts on riding in Austin and the show later. I've got 250 groupons to take care of.

no update.

Not alot going on. The dude is on his 11th ear infection now in the past 4 months. Its probably the same one, but it keeps going away, then coming right back.

Last saturday was the crit. It was a blast. I got 2nd, Nate is big and he killed it. more updates here. There is a good video too.

I got in about 14 hours in 4 days between thurs and sunday last week. I haven't really ridden since.

I am leaving for Austin tonight, in this mess. Going to the NAHBS.
I've never been, but I hope it to be 3 times better than interbike. Interbike sucks.

I've got a crazy deal on some wheels right now. C-4 170/55 hubs, cx-ray spokes to 2011 reynolds 46mm tubulars or clinchers. $1000/set.

I've got 6 sets of wheels to glue today before I leave at 6, back to work, I'll have good pics from Austin hopefully.

Racing Saturday

Got the volker18 ride at 9am saturday, 3 hours, then racing the crit(click) at 3pm. Then potpies for $5. The course at the river market is pretty sweet, some climbing and fast corners.

I'm still heavy, not less than 170 ever. 2 years ago I was fast at 160 and usually around 164. Last summer I was always around 167 or so. But having not weighed myself in over 6 months, and all of a sudden being heavy makes me think I gained a ton of muscle throughout the cx season. This could be wishful thinking.

Hopefully after a few months of racing I'll get back down to 165 or so, maybe 160 by tulsa tough.

I'm eating way better now, 1 or 2 carrots a day. Eating carrots help me eat more healthy all the way around. Plus I've tried brushing my teeth at 7, this keeps me from going into the kitchen during every commercial break while watching tv through the night.

I've got a good team this year for the cat 2 races, Matt O, Matt M, Kent W, Jason K, and me. Its going to be exciting racing with more people.

CX season made me realize that I need to race more road to good at cross. I can be fast for a lap or 2, stay with the leaders, even win the first lap, but I don't have good power for 1 hour or more. So, this season, I will be racing more races, bigger races, longer, harder, faster, all that good stuff.

Racing

Good recap and pics from the cx race of last week here. This week is the crit. A great course is planned and prizes are ready. SC won himself some sweet tubular rims from velocity and we have some fusion clincher rims for the next 2 races. POTPIE is hosting the after party with there $5 potpies and $1 pbrs. You can't miss it!

Plan is to ride 3 hours saturday, then work, then race, then rest.

I'm trying out a new training plan this year(2011). I have been putting in 12 hours in 3 or 4 days, then taking 3 as "rest days" with only 5 hours or riding. I'll keep you updated as it goes. It might not last too long. So thurs through sunday are "more miles" days.

I road this morning, you could barely see anything. Lots of fog. I flatted again, thats 3 flats in 4 days of riding.

FMB order I am putting in soon. Let me know if you want some of the best tires for $75 ea. File tread, gripo xls, and ssc.

Weekend and cheap stuff.

Had a good weekend for riding and weather. Saturday morning we had close to 20 show up for the team ride, 3.5 hours later I was home doing dishes, then back to the store to get ready for Street Cred.

PICS HERE.

I rolled around this topic all day, I have never done the cx race at the bottoms, and couldn't decide between my spooky road bike or my 29er single speed.

Figuring I would spin out too much on my 9er, I went with the spooky. Very bad. It was like taking a swiss army knife to a nuclear war. The course was actually perfect for a 29er, with the exception of a little pavement...there was mud everywhere, and lots of snow banks to jump. I started out in ok position, then hit the mud and lost a few spots, then hit the next mud section, then the next, I had fallen back to 7th or so, then go to pavement into a headwind and got up to 3rd before flatting, this was all in the first 4 minutes of the race.

I walked for a while, maybe 5 minutes, last place had passed me, of the 20 rider field, and found Levon taking pictures. He let me take his bike, his 26" geared bike. The seat was way to low but it didn't matter, the tires had air. I battled back to 4th or 5th. It was a very cool race, the bottoms are super flat but the loading docks gave you some vertical challenge.

In the end my feet were frozen, I was covered in mud, and I genuinely felt like I had just raced a cx race. My thighs were on fire due to the very low saddle and I could feel the effects of the 3.5 hour ride earlier.

Sunday we had the gothr ride at 1pm, we had lots of riders here too. Ride was about 3 hours at a fast pace the whole time. Lots of wind and climbing.

Cold!

Its cold outside, really cold. I'll be on the trainer till Friday.

We had our team party last weekend. It was pretty awesome.
I'm personally excited about these.

Street Cred State 1 was last Saturday.

It was fun, I am not sure how I got beat.

I will be killing it this week at the cyclocross RACE!

Tires.

Great article about tires here.

They say that 25mm tires actually have less rolling resistance than 23's. Also proved quite a few points that people already new, like latex tubes lowering resistance by 10%. For flat crits, I might be riding 25's, but at least 23's. I've actually always have raced 21's, especially for road races, but crits might be different this year. Driving a 90 degree corner rocking 25s at 35mph and 75psi sounds like fun.

Many people say that tubulars "feel" better than clinchers. I've always believed that high quality tubulars feel better than low quality clinchers myself. But if you want to compare a 200gram 320tpi corsa cx open clincher with latex tube to a similar tubular, the "feel" will be the same. You'll just be riding a rim that is lighter.

I'm not saying don't ride tubulars, I'm saying don't feel like someone has the advantage if they are and your not. I will probably be rocking 50mm tubular wheels that weigh 1100 grams and cost $700 this year with corsa cx/cs or mavic tubular tires.

You could just as easily ride a nice clincher wheel, maybe stan's alpha or velocity a23 rims, with 20/24 velocity race hubs, for half the price almost.
