Cross racing

I was hoping to race this weekend, but since wednesday there has been gunk coming out of my nose and pain from my head and throat. I haven't raced since July 4th weekend which is a huge bummer. My weight is still on the high side. 173 this morning. I need to get a little more fit than this, I thought being sick for a week would help, but it hasn't, abstaining from alcohol hasn't helped either. Guess I need to start exercising more. A few customers do crossfit. LIKE THIS. I'm thinking of giving it a try. Just no time right now.

Built up my single speed cx bike. Tried doing a magic gear of 43/18 on computer its supposed to work but there is a little slack in the chain. Tried all the gears up there, 43/19 too tight, 42/19 too loose, no way to win, maybe go down to 36/15 or something, will have to reconfigure.

Might plan on going to gateway cross cup. click here. Its a wednesday, which kind of sucks, but I hope to go. Single speed race pays out a good amount of money so it could be worth the trip.

We got in over 40 tubular cx tires, bunch of fangos and grifos. 34 and 30mm tires are $45 each. I would recommend them. If you are racing uci elite races(cat1 or pro) then get 32s, but I'd recommend 34s for most people. If you want to go really fast, buy some tufo flexus tires, 700x32, 300 grams each, $75 each.

New Baby and Cross.

Got a new baby thursday. The boy's name is Ean. He's good so far, just likes to eat a lot...not much sleep but that is what I expected. Much less sleep for my wife too. I feel bad that she has all the work to do...but I feel good for the people that I have to interact with. I think I would have hurt someone by now if I were in her shoes.

Lots of cx clinics and training going on. Its crazy, especially in CO, Portland, and MA. Nothing really going on here. I'm glad. CX is hard, its a long season with Nationals in January. With the racing being this hard, I don't want to even sit on a cx bike until the 2nd week of september. Just the thought of it makes my legs hurt..in a good way.

Below is a picture of a new mtn. bike crank. Its a double, with 39/27 gearing. I'd say this is perfect for someone small. People with 170mm crank arms want to be able to turn gears well...but its hard when the smallest chainring is 34t. This brings it down to 27, that should be nice for a lot of ladies out there. Plus there only $85. They'll fit on any normal 68mm english shell cx bike.

CXTIRES

There are probably 100 tires out there you can buy and race for cx. What works for people in Portland doesn't work for people in Kentucky and vise versa....here in KC, its a bit harder, since weather isn't exactly forecastable here. Last year we had a super dry season. You could race the hutchinson Piranha all year and never be at a disadvantage. That tire is simply super fast, and since its tubeless ready, it can also be a lightweight setup. There is tons of reading for going tubeless, but if you don't have a tubeless ready tire, like stan's or hutchinson, your eventually going to get beat from a mechanical.

Kenda, they have a bunch of tubeless ready cx tires, 700x32, coming out, they don't look bad, or that heavy either.

If I were riding clinchers this season, I would have two tires, Maxxis Mudwrestlers and Hutchinson Piranhas. The mudwrestlers...you'd have to run tubed. If you have to run tubeless, hutchinson does make the bulldog, its a huge tire, if you are racing cx for the first time, and want the most advantage in handling and confidence in turning, ride these...but they are slow on dry surfaces.

The last clincher tire, the panaracer crossblaster, its the best tire if you can only have 1 tire. Its fast all around, and really light.

I am racing tubulars this year. My favorites are FMB and Tufo. FMB is crazy good, all handmade in france, probably the most beautiful bike pieces you can hold in your hand. There super mud tire is coming in soon, and the gripoxl, ssc, and ssc sprint.

Tufo, they make tires in Europe as well, tubeless tubulars and super fast too. I'll probably be racing the PRIMUS. Its so fast....all the time. The cubus is a cool tire too, but probably wouldn't run it unless it was super muddy.

On my scale the flexus primus or cubus weigh 300 grams. The fmbs weigh 400, just like the challenge or vittoria.

Tufo flexus tires cost $80, the non flexus tires or $45, the fmb are $90.

Haven't decided on a bike yet. There are too many options, we even just started selling Stevens. They are super light, 1200 gram frames with light 400 gram forks. English threaded bb so you can run the chris king bottom brackets.

If no one buys this in august, I'll build it up to 16lbs with 1x10 and tubulars. Like I keep saying, I might save money and buy a stevens, get the weight down below 15...

The nova race is an awesome bike, the same fork as the supernova, light 7005 aluminum frame...should be fast.

Riding with purpose.

Wednesday I was allowed to ride a little, I could meet at 7:30, so when Joe met me, we got a call from a friend saying they broke there chain, so we road out to the swope trails with a new quick link and chain tool.

On a normal ride, it seems boring to me, there's no real objective, there's no goal or finish line, its just riding and pacing cars. Sometimes it gets fun but in this heat, I'd almost rather ride my trainer in my dark garage.

We fix the chain, ride back, after 25 miles and its 9pm I realize I had left my keys out at swope. Yeah! Now I get to have a nother ride with purpose, out to swope at 6am to get my keys, luckily they were still there and I got in 2 good rides in 12 hours...not bad, considering I haven't ridden much at all since Sunday.

I'm 90% sure I'm not racing this weekend, my wife will be having our 2nd baby soon, so I am trying to get as much rest and sleep as possible before hand. Plus I think its gonna be about 110degrees out there both days.

I've been trying the new xt pedals out this week. I didn't like them at first, but after a ride the springs broke in a little and now they are pretty smooth. The engagement is spot on, and there's way more surface area contact between the pedal and shoe for better power transfer, kind of like the look quartz. They weigh 348 grams, my eggbeaters with ti spindles weigh in about 219, so thats a good weigh penalty right there... but the more I ride the xt, the more I like them...

112 miler

6am start, there were a bunch of people who woke, more than 30 I think. We got going pretty good through bonner springs where we hit a few hills and thing split up. By the time we made it 24/40 there were about 12 of us.

We stopped to fill bottles and were off to Leavenworth, taking 24/40 to Tonganoxie, then a special county road 29 to Leavenworth. Halfway there we ignore a detour sign, hoping it is passable by bike, but the bridge is out and there is a big creek, probably 30 fee wide, so we turn back and take the detour. By the time got to Leavenworth, I was pretty cooked. Feet hurt, started to feel cramps, and hungry. This was no surprise to me, the longest ride I've done this year is probably Joe Sheehan at 53 miles or so...

By now its around 9:30 or 10. So we had about 75 miles in 3 to 3.5 hours of riding with only 35 miles to go. We ride Eisenhower all the way to K5 to take K5 back to KCK, but there's a no pass sign. We study for a while, a few people mention flood, and we decide to take K7 back to Leavenworth Road in KCK. The next group, about an hour behind us took k5, they said there was water, but only a few inches in some parts, completely passable, but the road was miserable, meaning, hilly. After 80 miles or so the hills will get you.

When we made it into KCK I just had no power left. I hung fine on the flats, but uphill I sucked. By the time we got to 38th/state ave Andrew and I started pedaling at a more comfortable tempo and let the remaining 5 pedal back to the store more quickly than us.

Thanks to http://kcpotpie.com/ I gave them a box of pasta and they cooked it, cooled it, and mixed it with veggies for the perfect post ride meal, plus they gave us fruit!
