100 miler

Coming in 6 days. Time to start training for cyclocross!

I've been reading cxmagazine religiously for the whole summer, not sure why except that I can't wait for cyclocross.

This whole pay out $41,000 in the middle of July idea didn't go over so well, at least thats how it looks. article here Watch the mens video at least, there's a great crash at the start. Notice how there are 20 or so riders in the elite race, with about 3 people watching.

If they had this event in November, I'm sure there'd be 5000 people there, but instead its in some resort place in a pasture...

The idea raleigh wasn't bad at all, it just looks like the entire northwest didn't share the same infinity for cx as Raleigh has.

Ride

Good Ride Today! First real ride since the swope mtn. ride 7 days ago, felt good.

James Taylor, the James Taylor was there, at least or 40 of the miles, we met at 7, andrew and I, did the beardsley loop over to independence, then back on broadway to meet John and James at 8am for the rest of the ride. Not too hot out, it was hot, but not when you are going.

Good wheels for cx this season? c-4(phil wood bearings) to cx-ray 20/24 to 38mm carbon rims, weight is 1140 grams, add tufo flexus tires and have a 1720 gram package for $890.

I wish thomas voeckler had enough time to get 3rd over frank, but no.

Know someone needing a full carbon 61cm bike or frame for racing, send them to me. I've got 8 or so to sell.

Weekend.

Road Swope with Joe. 8 miles at swope felt like the 40 mile hammer fest we do on the road saturday morning. The new section at the top is really cool, fast, flowy, a good place to take your lady if you have one.

Ended up not racing sunday, didn't have a good fork for good steering, air was lost in my rear tires, and brakes still needed work, plus it was hot.

Ended up doing a 1 hour recovery ride during Benon's nap. I haven't done one of these in years. Its hard to do. I'm used to pedaling hard all the time, then going to bed and waking up with my legs hurting....this needs to change if I want to get faster.

Charger

Computer has been down all week, found it is the charger that is bad. Anyone having an extra apple laptop charger willing to trade for inner tubes, let me know.

Riding is ok this week. The 29er is almost built, should be ready by 7:45am saturday for a swope ride and hopefully stays together to ride sm sunday.

I keep reading about this guy, from espn, twittering about how bike crashing is funny. It is amazing how when a football player gets knocked unconscious or a line drive knocks out a fielder, no one laughs, no one calls it funny, its serious. But if a cyclist racing 30mph gets ran over by a car and thrown into a barbed wire fence, they get laughed at by americans, what's the deal?

Riding

Back to 2 a days. I felt pretty sick this week but finally last night I was good on the bike. Didn't want to push it so I settled for 45 minutes with about 20 minutes of sprint work. I've been the same weight this whole season, usually by now I have at least another 1000 miles ridden and am a healthy 10 lbs. less of body weight.

So now I'm riding 2 times a day. Trying to get 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour at night. Usually ends up being 40 minutes or so though. Hopefully this helps me lose some weight and keep what little form I have gained this season.

Saturday, 8am ride from 18th st. store, 3 hours or so. 1st hour will be cat 4 pace, then it should start going good. Should be good training for THIS.

Maybe mtn. biking sunday if its dry, getting ready for THIS.

TOL

Not a whole lot to write about. Saturdays race was very hard. The start was a little chaotic with the announcer yelling go while all the officials were yelling no, so I was one of the last ones clipped in. I pedaled hard to pass a bunch of riders. The course on campus is very hard from the back. The turns are tough and there are a lot of them, most of them just before a hill. When you are in the back you are slowing down when the guys in the front are speeding up to hit the hill.

Safe to say its best to ride the front in this race.

After 2 laps I was still on, but getting thirsty, I was drinking but I guess not enough. The next lap up I missed a bottle, the feeder tried dumping it on my head while I was trying to grab it from her to put it in my mouth. It didn't work. So 15 minutes later I'm chasing, without water, I get behind a dude who I thought was chasing and he wasn't going fast, I don't realize this till the gap between me and the top 30 riders or so are another 15 seconds up the road.

I see 9 to go next lap, I could have easily stopped riding and got in the shade, but at this point I was getting good feeds so I kept going for training, riding pretty hard.

The course on KU is hard, Most people say its the hardest. Its the turns before the hills and the way the hills get steeper as you get to the top that does this.

I ended up 29th place out of 70 riders or so. I'm pretty sure had I stayed with the top 3 groups I would have had this result anyways.

Sunday I woke up and didn't want to race, I ate a good breakfast though and eventually felt a little better. Plus with everyone asking me what time I race, I ended up registering, paying another $50 and pulling on my cooling suit. The downtown race seemed really easy. You had to pedal hard, but it was not windy at all, so no one was getting dropped. Kent went for a prime, $50, he won, but eventually learned Heath Blackgrove was up the road and already got it, sucks.

With 5 to go I was losing my focus, I was slowly going backwards but eventually realized and jumped a few times. With 2 to go I was mid 30s....did't see a safe place to move up and I figured it would slow a bit on the 1st or 2nd turn into the final lap. I got behind a big dude I thought would go hard but he didn't go anywhere, actually probably lost some spots. I ended up 35th I think.

Its mtn. bike season.

If you ride a 61cm bike and want a new full carbon road frame, let me know, I have a few.
