200 miles/3 days

Legs still feel really good. I recovered really well each day. Immediately after each ride I ate food and had a protein/recovery drink powder in a chocolate milkshake. Sleep was ok, Benon has had a 104F temp every night for a while and gets us up, my wife more than me though. We were at the Hospital this morning for a few hours and all they could say was to keep the same medicine and come back friday if it is still bad. 4 days in a row with a 104 fever.

Each day I really focused on slower cadence with hard gears. I tried always to be in a 2 or 3 gears ahead of what I'd normally ride. Sunday especially was a hard gear day. I'm trying to build some muscle since I haven't lifted in a gym in over 4 years. Weight sunday night was 177.5. People tell me that your body freeks out after riding and holds on to carbs/water for a while and then when you rest the weight goes down. We'll see. Either way, I'd like to get down to 165 by May and 161 by june.

Just when you think you can't fit anything else into this little store. I bought this for $180, if you want it for $180, let me know, otherwise, I will be riding it mondays hopefully.

Kobh

I've wanted one of these for a while. It is an amazing bike with the same carbon as the dogma, just made for punishing cobbles instead of powering up hills. Its a mans bike. It used to be $5500, for the frameset, now its $4500. I can't say I'm surprised, I would probably buy a dogma before I would get a kobh, but now I can see selling a few of these for real.

Did 90 miles today, felt really good. Found a magic road up north, like 20 miles north, has miles and miles of smooth, flatish road with no cars, serious magic. I will be going back there.

9am ride saturday. Meets at 18th/wyandotte. 30-40 miles. 20-22mph. Please come.

1300 grams!

18/24h. CX-ray spokes. DA 7900 Hubs. Hubs are built to last 200,000 miles. Rims are tubeless from Stan's.
1300 grams. Cost is $500.

I can also build these up to amclassic hubs, 1200 grams. They'd be $600.

170 POUNDS!

Well, I got home, found some batteries, popped them in the charger and went to sleep. Woke up, popped the batteries in the scale(scale had been out of commission for almost a year), and stood on it. 170, yup, no problem here. I was wondering why my pants and shirts still fit, how could I have gained 15 lbs. with my pants still fitting?

Still work to do, I have high blood pressure and resting heart rate is around 70, both those numbers need to go down alot. This means no more candy/pop, or at least not as much.

I'd like to be 162 by june, if I'm racing a lot this year it shouldn't be hard to do.

Monday night ride tonight! 6pm, leaves from 39th/bell for 1 hour of riding, then mccoy's $7 pitchers/pizzas/burgers.

183 pounds!

Found the scale at a party last night. Haven't weighed myself in over 6 months. Was never above 170 for years. Now there's work to do.

Snow!

Nothing but snow and cold for a while. Looks I'll be riding the 29er single speed for a while! Hopefully I'll be able to get out saturday/sunday for some real mtn. biking. Doesn't look like riding on the road is a good idea right now.

Got my bamboo frame finally. Complete with bb30 shell and ti paragon dropouts. 2660 grams! Thats a lot. Still can make it 18 lbs. pretty easily though. Should be a good GRASS TRACK BIKE!

I've been building lots of wheels lately. Some nice ones that sell cheap. I'm forecasting a new trend this year...29er nmsw rims laced to track hubs. I've got red all city hubs, sapim laser spokes, stan's crest rims, were talking 1600 gram bomb proof track wheels that look good!

I've got some 38mm carbon tubular rims, 320 grams each, $125 each. New.

crashes

Went for a good 3 hour ride Saturday. In the span of 5 minutes I had crashed into 2 different vehicles, 2 different times. It definitely wasn't my fault both times, but I could have been paying more attention like I usually do.

Anyways, pay attention and try and stay safe when riding.

CX.

Its freezing! I road an hour yesterday and thought I was going to freeze. It was one of those rides where the whole time your wishing you'd just get off your bike and run into the closest place with heat....almost went into a cricket store to unfreeze my hands but eventually made my way to work and got the blood going again. I might be on the trainer today.

With cx over I'm already preparing for next year. Tires, Wheels, Groups, Brakes, and Frames. I road both ultegra and sram this year. They are way different in feel and shifting. The ultegra felt super strong shifting, but breaking was poor, if I go with ultegra in 2011, there will be some trp cx9 v brakes on my bike, they will work.

I really liked the sram red, especially with the 1x10 system. The shifting on the right lever is super stiff and quick, exact. especially with yokozuna cable/housing. I'm guessing I'll probably prefer sram red, if I do 1x10, we'll have to wait and see.

With sram levers, I will 100% be using shorty ultimates. They are the best, lightest, strongest, fastest, coolest.

Tires. I raced tubulars and tubeless this year. I had a set of 6700 tubeless wheels with piranhas. They are fast but really heavy. I knocked almost 2 lbs off my bike switching to 38mm carbon tubulars with tufo flexus tires. The tires are tubeless tubulars, really light, 1/2 lb. lighter than a pair of challenge or dugast.

If I go with tufo, I will most definitely need a mud tire! Tufos are awesome, but on a super muddy course, the slip a little and having that extra confidence and grip is worth the 1/2 lb. Especially if you have 4 lbs of mud on your bike/shoes already.

So I might go with these.

They are made here in France.

The other obvious mud tire option are rhinos.

Everyone rides these. They are really good.

So why not a file tread? Well, personally, I find the flexus tire perfect in any condition that would warrant a file tread, plus the flexus is way lighter. I'd take a little rolling resistance over saved weight, plus they do grip some...I guess what I'm saying is...if I have a 3rd wheelset to put tires on, I'll do these.

I won't though, I can almost guarantee you I won't.

Now there is the frame. Pros ride whatever they are given, its free, but not for me. I gotta pay for all this, so it needs to be really good if I'm paying alot. Its not just about weight or stiffness, good fit is key for being fast on cx. After riding a lot of bikes, I realized this.

I raced the blue ex and the focus mares this year. The focus is made in germany, it seemed stronger, but was 200 grams heavier. The focus had a shorter tt and much shorter headtube. Both bikes I got going fast and both felt really good, but there is 1 thing that I am having trouble deciding. Its the bb drop. The Blue EX has a full 1cm higher bb. This translates to less control, but more clearance for pedaling and not clipping your pedal...

Then there is the new VD FTB. Its as light as the blue, they say stronger than the blue, and it has a much lower bb, but still has the same fit as the blue, taller headtube, 56cm tt.

The Blue EX is way cheaper though, $500 cheaper, 25% less.

Actual weight of the ex is 1350 grams for frame, but fork weighs 540grams!

The Focus Mares is a beautiful bike. Made in germany, and feels super fast. I just don't feel the 555mm tt fitting me right, especially with the lower ht.

I'm leaning towards the ftb right now, I'll get some in soon to check out. All 3 of these models have a aluminum version in the exact size for less 1/2 the price of the carbon version.

The blue sp is only $600 for frame/fork/headset. It is bb30 ready, a friend of mine built one up, 16.5lbs with aluminum wheels! M/L frame weight is around 1690grams.

The FTB has the gin/trombones which is probably one of the lighter frames for aluminum, 1450 grams.

Series 60.

I won both the Single Speed and the Open for Series 60. Series 60 is a great thing we have in kc. It brings together a lot of people in a way that the races could not if they were by themselves.

The last race of series 60, grote prijs, was awesome. Lots of racers showed up, there were 2 kegs of blvd and lots of food. The location was good too, close parking and in the town of shawnee, kind of had a good community feel to it.

The course at grote prijs was really fun for the ss race. Lots of mini power sections and some tight turning going on. Some pics here. It was definitely one of those courses where your first lap was almost as slow as your last lap. It was hard to just haul through the course with so many sections where you could fall easily. I won it.

In the open race, a few sections got really icy, due to the snow/ice unthawing and then freezing again in a matter of minutes. I crashed on the backside of the "slide." It was my favorite section during the ss race but turned hazardous during the open. I had sold my blue, so I raced my pake in the open race, I just needed to finish and thats what I did, just cruised around after a hard lap and finished.

Turns out, if anyone would have shown up and finished every race in the open, they would have won the series. I did miss a few, and I did get some good placings, even a win, but it kind of feels stolen, well, I didn't really steal anything, I got a set of grifo 34mm tires for winning the thing. In hindsight, I could have skipped every series 60 race, stayed warm, and just raced the boxing cat 3 race with the same outcome, grifo 34s. I did have more fun racing though.

Pedaling and Racing.

There are three types of Pedaling. You pedal hard, or pedal smart, or both. Watch all the pros in europe race cx, watch their pedaling in slowmo, its perfect.

There are plenty of times when I get lazy and do not pedal right, it actually took me a few years of riding clipped in to totally understand how to be powerful and efficient. This took probably 2000 miles riding a fixed gear, eventually your leg muscles get tired and you start using your ankle, you gotta move your ankle and power down to be efficient. I still find myself mashing along, especially in the first lap of every elite race. Its hard, you pedal the whole time, break into a corner, stand up and sprint out of the saddle to keep up, you keep doing this, then the elasticity breaks on everyone, and its time to get efficient. Its is crazy hard to pedal this hard, this efficient. Its not a gift, or talent, you simply accept the pain or you go slower. I realized this racing at epic cross. It was super flat with a few sections where you really had to pedal to keep up.

Once you get the pedaling down, its even harder to try and keep a good stroke during base miles. Yes, its easy to pedal well when you are going 85-90%, but at 50% its super hard to pedal and feel 100% momentum into the cranks when your body is only putting out 50.

2011 calender posted by kca click here. Perry Roubaix sounds exciting...word is 15-20 mile loops, 3 miles or so of gravel, ends on the uphill finish that the dam race ends on.

Saturday Ride.

9am. Wyandotte and 18th. Come early for coffee. 2 hours at least. Road bikes.

Epic Cross

Very flat course.

A friend sent me a link to their garmin 500/powertap data.

Its always interesting to see power from a cx race. Its always way higher than you expect, especially if you train on the road alot. Riding on grass/dirt sucks more power out of your wheels and it makes you work harder. I've seen lots of racers come into the road season twice as fast just from racing a season of cross. I try to make everyone race cross, it makes you handle your bike better and teaches you to pedal correctly.

I did ok in the race. I won the ss race and started the open race good, then I crashed a few times and fought my back to 4th. The ground unthawed a lot between the ss race and the open race. The slick corners caught me off guard.

New Years Resolution.

Its New Years Day. I wish I was out at swope for a 29er for a few hours, instead I am building up A23 nmsw rims to velocity road hubs and gran compe track hubs with sapim laser spokes and selling carbon wheels.

I feel pretty tired from racing cross off the old year. Its been a while since I road really hard. My Resolution for 2011 is to eat good. These past few years have sucked for me diet wise. I have been trying to prove to myself equipment, preparation, and diet won't dictate my results and I keep getting proved wrong. I think I'm finally at a place where I know how to race and just need to focus on the hard part, diet and preparation. Last night was a good start, my wife and I ate HERE. Then for breakfast I had Really good Salmon/eggs/coffee. Only problem is I can't pay people to serve me good food and wash the dishes.

So, I am looking for food that is good for you, not expensive, easy to make, easy to clean up, is good left over for the next day...all that. I can't live off this stuff either, even though I'm tempted.

I guess soups are good, pasta/chicken, quesadillas, beer, what else?

I need to hear the story of this. I think its the 30+.
